I had the best day ever! Father son day was full of scenic drives, cookies, and thrifting. I’ve been working on my son’s room for a little bit now. So far, my son has been super excited in the renovations. I was surprised to see how dedicated he got in picking out the bedroom color. I figured a trip to one of the local thrift stores in Charleston would be a fun way to kick off the project.
Thrift stores are a goldmine for unique furniture that you won’t see in anyone else’s home. We walked out with a cool piece to place above his bed. I found a ton of items that inspired me to look online for some lookalikes. I had to share the haul:
We found a vintage plane propeller. YES, a plane propeller—how cool is that? I immediately knew it would be perfect above his bed. It ties into his obsession of all things planes and adds this really interesting, adventurous vibe to the room. I’ve already got a vision of how it’s going to look once we hang it up. It’s the kind of thing that makes the room feel special, you know? Like it’s his space, not some kid’s bedroom from a catalog.
I came across a beautiful vintage rocking chair that’s just begging for a little TLC. It’s the kind of piece that would be perfect in a kid’s room, and I’d love to restore it. But I got curious about finding something similar online at a more affordable price. I love the idea of a brand-new rocking chair without the effort of refurbishing it. I’m just not keen on spending extra on a vintage piece only to put more work into it. I found a lookalike rocking chair on Kohl’s for under $250. I’m still considering if I even need a rocking chair because I like the vibe of a modern swivel chair for the room aesthetic.
The thrift store had a few lamps that caught my eye. There was this one with a really nice wicker base, but the shade was not quite my vibe. Still, I loved the structure of it and figured I could find new lamp shades for the top until i saw it was $750… To spend that amount on just the base was not logical to me. I found similar table lamps from Bed, Bath, & Beyond for only $91.79 each! That is a STEAL!
I found this cute, minor worn-down bench that would be perfect for the end of a bed. It definitely had potential, but I started thinking about how easy it would be to just grab a brand-new one with fresh upholstery. I mean, the thought of a comfy spot to toss clothes at the end of the day, or to sit on when I need to put my shoes on… I could totally see that in the master bedroom. Again, I got inspired and started browsing online for something similar—because sometimes it’s nice to skip the DIY work when you’re after something functional and stylish. I found an identical entryway bench. This one has to come home to me! Maybe my next project will have to be the master bedroom now!👀
