How to Build a Keter Shed

This step-by-step guide covers everything from gathering tools and materials to the assembly process, ensuring a stylish and functional addition to your backyard.

I traveled to my hometown in New York with a mission: to build a Keter shed for my dad. This project aimed to create a durable storage solution for his backyard. Here are the steps I took to build him a brand new shed. First, we gathered all necessary tools and materials, which came with pre-cut panels and easy-to-follow instructions. We also made sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for proper ventilation and door alignment. By choosing a Keter shed, we provided a stylish and functional addition to my dad’s outdoor space that blends seamlessly with the existing landscape. This DIY shed project enhanced the overall appeal of his backyard. If you’re considering building a shed, this step-by-step guide will help you achieve a professional and durable result.

Materials

Step 1: Demolition

The First Order of Business

First step, was clearing out the space where the new shed would stand. We removed old garden tools, pool toys, and various forgotten odds and ends. The demolition process was actually the fun part for us. We primarily used our own manual labor to dismantle the body of the shed. For the roof, we used a wrecking bar and took it down piece by piece. The shingles were tightly secured, which made the task more challenging.

Step 2: Removal

Bagster from Home Depot

With the debris piled high, I made a trip to Home Depot to get a Bagster for hauling away the wood broken down from our old shed. I used the Bagster website to schedule a pickup appointment quickly. We gathered all the remnants into the bags and placed them close to the street for easy access. The next day, their pickup truck arrived to collect our bags of debris.

Step 3: Installing a Vapor Barrier

Creating a solid foundation is crucial for any structure. I began by leveling the ground, ensuring it was flat and free of obstacles. To protect the shed from moisture, I installed a vapor barrier beneath the base. This vapor barrier also helps prevent weeds from growing underneath the shed.

Step 4: Building the Base

with Pressure-Treated Wood

The base is the backbone of the shed—a 7×7 frame constructed from 4-inch pressure-treated wood, designed to withstand ground contact. We carefully measured and assembled the wood. I recommend using a level for each step of the base and foundation to ensure everything is balanced and flat before constructing the shed. This attention to detail provides peace of mind that the structure will be stable and durable

Step 5: Foundation

Made of Pavers and Gravel

We went with the sand route, I think this is a better alternative than concrete pouring for those who are not regularly diy-ing shed builds. Next, pavers were laid out, each one contributing to the foundation’s durability. I again used a level but, also measured each pavers distance from each other to make sure that the foundation is organized throughout. Then, came pouring the gravel, packed down to enhance drainage and stability.

Step 6: Build the Shed

With the groundwork laid, it was time to build the Keter Shed. Each wall panel, every roof piece, and all the fittings came together smoothly. We started with the four corners of the shed, followed by the walls and then moved onto the roof and finished with the doors. The instructions could not have been more seamless. All it really took were a few screws and a cordless drill to assemble this shed.

Building a shed for my dad was more than a construction project; it was a journey of renewal. From demolition to final touches, every step was a testament to the care and effort invested in this meaningful project.
