These DIY hanging pendant lights were such a simple way to make our outdoor dining space feel more finished, cozy, and boujee without hardwiring anything. I used woven baskets to get the look of designer outdoor pendants, then hung them over the table to create that warm backyard dining vibe.

Materials

Woven Baskets (Qty. 3)
Solar Lights (Qty. 1)
Thin Rope (Qty. 1 )
Wire Cutter (Qty. 1)

Step 1: Choose Your Basket Shade

Start by finding woven baskets that have the shape and size you want for your pendant lights. I liked the look of these because they felt coastal, textural, and worked well with the rest of the outdoor dining area.

Tip: Look for baskets with an open weave so light can shine through.

Step 2: Clean up your Basket

If your basket has handles, remove them carefully with a Wire Cutter.

You don’t want the final product to be obvious that this was created from a basket.

Keep the opening as tight as possible so the basket sits cleanly around the light.

Step 3: Hang the Rope to the Pergola

Start by securing your Thin Rope to the pergola, pavilion, or ceiling structure.

Make sure it’s pulled tight and anchored firmly at both ends so it can safely hold the weight of the lights and baskets.

Space the line evenly based on where you want each pendant to hang.

Step 4: Attach the Basket

Once prepped, slide or position the basket onto the rope where each light will hang.

Secure it lightly in place so it stays centered and stable.

Step 5: Add the Solar Light Piece

Attach or position the solar light component so it can properly collect sunlight during the day.

Make sure the solar panel is angled upward and not blocked by the basket or rope.

This step is what allows the bulbs to charge and function properly at night.

Step 6: Hook the Light Bulb Inside the Basket

Take each Solar Light and hook it onto the rope inside the basket.

Center the bulb so it hangs naturally in the middle of the basket opening.

Double-check that the cord isn’t twisted and that the bulb sits evenly.

Step 7: Adjust the Height

Step back and check the height of each pendant.

They should hang low enough to feel intentional over your seating area, but high enough that they don’t obstruct conversation or movement.

Make small adjustments until everything looks balanced.

Step 8: Turn Them On

Once everything is secured and positioned, turn the lights on to test the final setup at night.

Check spacing, brightness, and overall symmetry.

This is where the installation comes together and the warm glow fills the space.

Final Thoughts

This was a simple DIY, but it completely changes the atmosphere of the space. The woven baskets soften the light during the day, and at night they create a warm, restaurant-style glow that makes the whole outdoor area feel more finished and inviting.
