I wasn’t planning to stop for chocolate that day, but when I walked past Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory’s window display on King Street—packed with caramel apples, chocolate-dipped strawberries, and hand-cut fudge—I had to take a look inside. And I’m so glad I did.
They had only been open for 8 days when I popped in, and I got to meet the owners, Mike and his fiancée (or wife? Either way, they’re a team). Originally from Missouri, they now live on Johns Island and are bringing serious energy and passion to downtown Charleston.
We ended up chatting about our mutual love for coffee and exploring local spots. It was one of those rare conversations where you realize you’re talking to people who really get it—how important it is to create an experience, not just a product. Between the inviting atmosphere and their excitement for what they’re building, you can just tell they’re going to crush it—especially with social media and the perfect King Street location working in their favor.
As soon as I walked in, I was greeted with a free sample of their candy apple—and that was all it took. One bite and I knew I wasn’t leaving without one. I bought a full one to bring home to my wife (husband win of the day), then grabbed a few more treats for myself:
Everything tasted fresh, handmade, and full of flavor. No shortcuts.
What made the biggest impression wasn’t just the chocolate—it was the people behind it. Mike and his partner clearly care about every detail, from the quality of the treats to the customer experience. It’s places like this that make Charleston special: small businesses run by passionate people who are proud of what they’re building.
If you find yourself on King Street, do yourself a favor and stop by Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. Whether you’re out with your family, looking for a gift, or just need a sweet pick-me-up, this place is 100% worth it.
Each month, I’ll be sharing a must-visit spot around Charleston—local favorites, hidden gems, and experiences that leave a lasting impression. Make sure to follow along if you’re exploring the city or just love discovering new places that hit the mark.
